Logan teenager Emilie Bevan is her grandmother's full-time carer. Now she's an enrolled nurse and can put her newly-learned skills into practice.

The 19-year-old was one of 122 students who graduated from Mater Education's Diploma of Nursing in Brisbane last week, critical in bolstering the healthcare workforce shortage across the state.

Ms Bevan said she feels more confident in caring for her grandmother, Mona, thanks to the 18-month program.

"I've been my nan's carer since my pop passed in August last year which took a big toll on her," she said.

"I help her with her medication and give her company so she doesn't feel lonely.

"I feel like I can use the skills and tips I learned in the Diploma to better look after her and give her advice."

Ms Bevan said she's looking forward to getting into the workforce.

"I've really enjoyed the experience and to show the younger generation that you can make a difference," she said.

"It's also allowed me to give back to my Indigenous elders, my people and my community - that to me is a big thing."

If you’re interested in a career in healthcare, applications are now open for the next intake of Mater Education’s Diploma of Nursing.
